Grandma Betsy

Grandma Betsy - Grandma Betsy is actually patterned after my own great great grandmother Elizabeth Pennington. She was captured by the Cherokee Indians at the age of 4 and rescued when she was 14.

When her brother came to rescue her from the Indians, Betsy like so many captives did not want to return. She had forgotten her native tongue and needed to relearn how to live life as a white settler.

What Betsy observed early on back among her people was the influence of the written word. When she met Dennis Pennington (a man who could read and write) Betsy married him so that her children would have this powerful skill. Dennis went on to become influential in early Indiana government and Betsy - in her own way helped influence the writing of the Indiana State Constitution.

Come hear my stories and learn about Grandma Betsy’s influence.
